The WIND

El nino el nina wind

The wind on Zanzibar is a much discussed topic in the kite world. The wind seasons run from June to September and from December to early March. Every season is different on Zanzibar, we have experienced seasons when you were kiting every day on your 9m2, but also seasons when we had no wind for a number of days or only for large kites (12m2 +). It remains a sport that depends on mother nature, but in general you will certainly spend enough hours on the water!

weather & wind

A place where the weather is always wonderful

The kitesurfing conditions on Zanzibar are suitable for all levels. From scratch beginners to hardcore kitesurfing experts. The best kite months are December to mid-March and June to September, when the El Nino and El Nina blow through the surfing village of Paje. Often you have a minimum of 12 knots which increases in the afternoon to 16-20 knots at high tide. The water temperature is above 24 degrees all year round, so you can definitely leave your wetsuit at home!

This is the perfect package if you have no experience with kitesurfing and want to learn this beautiful sport. Kitesurfing is not a sport that you can just learn in 1 afternoon. What do you learn

In 9 hours with 2 beginners / 1 instructor / 1 kiteset

Building up your kite and knowledge about kitematerials
Learn how to rig the kite, learn all about your material, bar extensions, line lengths, different systems, kite types, etc.
Safe starting and landing
Perhaps the most important thing during your course. Learn to take off/land independently and safely on the beach.
Safety systems, self rescue
Various safety systems are explained, emergency situations are discussed and a step-by-step plan is drawn up so that you can save yourself and get to safety at any time.
Theory & rules
What about priority rules? What about the weather? With what wind force do you use which size kite? What should you take into account? Enough to discuss during our joint theory
Kite control
You cannot practice this enough, 80% of kitesurfing is kite control and a lot of attention is paid to this during the course
Upwind bodydragging / board rescue
What happens if you lose your board? Then you can safely reach your board or the shore by upwind body dragging. It is also good training to be able to fly your kite with one hand.
Spot analysis
Every kite spot is different, every forecast is different. We teach you what to pay attention to if you want to go kiting yourself.
Kite relaunch
It is easy to relaunch your kite in strong winds, but can you also manage with less wind?
Waterstart
If everything else goes well, we have finally arrived at the water start! We're trying to get you on the board.
Independend practise
Towards the end of the course, a lot of attention is paid to independence. We sometimes let you practice yourself (together with the other student) so that you can help each other and practice independently.
Turns & Upwind kiting
Is everything going well? Of course, we will occasionally visit you after the course and provide supervision. We also give you tips and tricks when we see that you have arrived at a bend or altitude walk!

FAQ

What happens after the 9 hour course?
You will practice as much as possible independently, together with another kiter. The wind often blows all day at our destinations, so there is plenty of time for everyone to spend hours on the water. Our team will supervise you during your practise and give you tips where needed.
What happens if I have or want private lessons?
If it happens that the grouplesson doesn't suit you in terms of your level, you may receive private lessons. If you take private lessons, you will complete the course a little faster, but it is also a little more intensive. Our rule is that 7 hours of private lessons are equal to the nominal 9 hours of shared lessons.
Do you really want private lessons? Please let us know in advance so that we can see what is possible.
What happens if I learn it much faster than the other participant?
We may then reassign you to someone of the same level. Depending on the group, we can also decide that you get your own kite. This may incur additional costs.
Am I Insured?
Do you listen to your instructor's instructions during our kite lesson? And does a kite break during the lesson? Then you are insured against this. Are you not listening to our instructor? For example, the instructor tells you to stay in a certain area and you keep moving on because you (quite understandably) like it so much? Then you are not insured if you break a kite. We recommend that you check your travel insurance carefully to see whether it also covers extreme sports. to avoid disappointment and hassle on holiday. We work together with Sportzeker and then you are always covered for everything!

FAQ

No, you need to bring your own kitegear or rent a complete set at € 399 / week
What happens if my level doen't match with this course
One person picks it up faster than the other and that is really no problem at all. If we see that you need extra lessons after the 9 hours, our instructor will take you aside and discuss with you how many hours he thinks you still need. Depending on whether other people in the group need extra lessons, the extra costs are: €60/hour for private lessons and €35/hour for shared lessons. You can also decide to exchange your rental for the rest of the week for 3 hours of extra lessons so that it does not cost you anything extra that week.

I joined KiteActive on the TV TAS 2022 downwinder. For me it was a long lasting dream to kite along the wadden islands and the trip really was a mindblowing experience. Now a week later, I still feel stoked!KiteActive managed to organise the trip in a safe way by having a large team of pro-kiters on the water who were able to perform rescues in case of any emergency, a RIB with an experienced crew who looked after us during the crossings and safeTRX watches which could be used to alert the coast guard. The downwinder lasted only 2 days, but it felt like a complete holiday. Kiting in between groups of hunderds of seals, while having a full rainbow on the background in the direction we were sailing, just sketching one of the pictures in my mind which will never fade away. Flat water spots, nice waves to play in, 4m swell during crossings, a nice combination of all sort of conditions. A trip of a lifetime.A big thanks for the KiteActive team, looking forward to the 2023 edition!

In 21 years of kiting this was by far my best Kite Experience ever. Riding out the TVTAS-downwinder was a huge challenge which I was Able to complete thanks to the Kiteactive team. Always making sure of our safety in very challenging conditions. 4m High Waves and very Strong currents were but of a few conditionaliteit to mention. But Above all their carefull planning and Knowledge of the North Sea and currents made for a safe yet exhilarating kiteadventure. A true challenge for kiteboard-experts only.Thanx Kiteactive-team. I had an awesome time.

Last weekend I did with Kite active the most ultimate downwinder of the Netherlands, which is TV TAS. With this downwinder you pass by all 5 wadden Islands, which are Texel, Vlieland Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermoniksoog. The downwinder was actually even longer, because we started from the mainland of the Netherlands, at Den Helder instead from Texel. Even though it's a 2 days kitesurf trip, it's been the best kitesurf trip for me so far. The thrill of passing all the wadden islands which is world heritage UNESCO, is a undescribable experience. The trip itself was very good organised bij the people from Kite active. They are very experienced kitesurfers, and they know the area very well. They are very friendly, give good briefings, and this not only at the start, but also at several other locations where necessary. Alse the hotel on Terschelling was very nice. The boat trip back, and the bus back to Den Helder was perfect organised.Be aware to be an experienced kitesurfer. Don't under estimate it, it's great if you're an advanced kitesurfer with enough experience to kite in big waves on sea. Despite the advanced level of all kiters in the group, we had to wear a Safetrx whatch for our safety. Which really made this trip possible and safe.

FAQs

What equipment should I take with me to Zanzibar?

Always try to take large sizes with you and, if you can choose, a larger board. The ideal kite set for an average weight of 75kg is a 15-12-9 m2 with a 140 board. Skimboards, strapless boards and foils are really cool toys in Zanzibar!

What is the wind like in Zanzibar?

The wind on Zanzibar is a much discussed topic in the kite world. The wind seasons are from June to September and from December to early March. Every season is different on Zanzibar, we have experienced seasons when you were working hard every day on your 9m2, but also seasons when we had no wind for a number of days or only for large kites (14m2 +). It remains a sport that depends on mother nature, but in general you will certainly enjoy jet kitesurfing!!!!!

Are vaccinations necessary?

Make sure you have completed all vaccinations with your doctor. If you come from the EU, a yellow fever vaccine is not mandatory, but it is if you come from other destinations. Regardless of length of stay, the following vaccinations are recommended for Tanzania: vaccination against DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio), vaccination against hepatitis A (contagious jaundice) and a yellow fever vaccination. If you have not had measles or a measles vaccination, an MMR vaccination is recommended for Tanzania. tip: Make an appointment early with the local GGD or GP (some vaccinations need a week before they work). More information can be found athttp://www.vaccinatiesopreis.nl/inentingen-tanzania/

Do I need a VISA?

Yes, but you have to buy this at the airport for $50. So always make sure you have enough dollars with you when you arrive at the airport. This saves you a lot of time.

How can I book?

You can book online without obligation via this link. Booking a trip with us is very easy. Just send us one message, phone call, whatsapp or send a carrier pigeon that you want to come with and we will arrange the rest. As soon as you book, we will reserve a place for you for a trip of up to 10 days. Once the deposit has been transferred (40% of the total amount), you can be sure that you will be there! You can still travel up to 2 days after your booking free cancel, after which you will be charged.

What is the group composition on Zanzibar?

Our groups can vary from young to old, and are often evenly distributed with both men and women. The group usually consists of ages between 20 and 50, with exceptions of course. We teach beginners and give tips to advanced kitesurfers, so you can expect every level from us. We also often offer group activities that you can participate in without obligation. On some trips you may share a large room with other KiteActive guests, but this will be indicated. You can often see in advance via our WhatsApp group which people will be present on the trip. Because this is our very first own Guesthouse, the groups are larger than normal. People from other countries can also stay in our guesthouse.

Do you also arrange the flight?

In principle no, we mainly give advice on which flight is best to book! You fly to Stone Town, Zanzibar city (ZNZ). After landing, it is another hour's drive to the end point, Paje. Tui flies direct for good prices, don't forget to look via Brussels because that can make a big difference. We further recommend that Skyscanner to check for your best flight. Would you rather have KiteActive arrange everything? No problem. Enter your dates, budget, etc. preferences (travel duration/leg space/transfers) by email and we will book the best flight for you for a €50 booking fee.

Is there more to do besides kitesurfing?

In addition to kite surfing, Paje is a perfect place to learn to dive or lie on the beach. In the evening you can always have a drink with fellow kite surfers in one of the local bars or resorts. For example, there is a big beach party every Friday evening at the Jambo bar and fun parties are regularly held at the nearby resorts.

Can I rent a car/scooter?

Yes, you rent a car for +/- $40 per day and a motorcycle for $30 per day. However, we do not recommend renting a car as a novice driver. In Zanzibar people drive on the left side and they have a quite aggressive driving style. In any case, take your international driver's license with you so that you do not have to pay off the police every time.
