Tarifa – by now a famous name in the kite, surf, and hippie world. The southernmost tip of Europe is a true paradise for surf and outdoor lovers, and in winter it becomes a fantastic destination! Below we’ll tell you why Tarifa should be on your list this winter.

Why is Tarifa the perfect winter destination?

Tarifa – by now a well-known name in the kite, surf, and hippie world. The southernmost tip of Europe is a true paradise for surf & outdoor lovers, and in winter it becomes a fantastic destination! Here’s why you should travel to Tarifa this winter.

Budget-friendly trip!

One of the reasons why Tarifa is so popular is the unbeatable price/quality ratio. Several low-cost airlines from all over Europe fly to Malaga, with return tickets ranging between €70 and €300 depending on the season. From the Netherlands, Transavia, Vueling, Ryanair, and EasyJet fly directly to Malaga.

Car rental is possible from as little as €5/day! If you prefer a bigger car that fits two people plus kite gear, expect to pay around €90/week. We always recommend comparing deals via carjet.com.

Accommodation: from surf hostels for €15–20 per night, to affordable Airbnbs, up to stylish boutique hotels for those who love a bit more comfort – Tarifa has it all.

Food & drinks: Spain is famous for its cuisine! Expect to spend around €10–35/day in one of Tarifa’s many excellent restaurants. All in all, you can easily spend a full week in Tarifa for as little as €600 all-inclusive.

Reliable wind

Tarifa is famous for its two wind systems: Poniente and Levante. Usually, you’ll get a few days of Poniente, a few calm days, and then a few days of Levante. These systems alternate, so sometimes you need a bit of luck if you arrive right in between. But don’t worry – there’s always plenty to do if the wind drops!

  • Poniente: a pleasant 12–20 knots side-onshore wind at Tarifa’s main beach, Los Lances – ideal for freeride and beginners.
  • Levante: strong side-offshore wind blowing up to 30 knots through the Strait of Gibraltar. Challenging and gusty, but magic for advanced riders and big air lovers!

Lots of different kitespots

The beauty of Tarifa is that there are many different kitespots, all within short driving distance. From wave spots to flatwater lagoons, there’s something for everyone. Most spots, however, are more suitable for intermediate and advanced kiters, as the beaches quickly get deep with waves and currents. Stay tuned – we’ll soon publish a full spot guide with all the details!

Plenty to do – even if you don’t kite!

Besides being a surf mecca, Tarifa is also a hotspot for outdoor and nature lovers. The surrounding mountains offer stunning hiking and mountain biking trails. You can also go whale & dolphin watching, take a day trip to Morocco, or try almost any outdoor sport you can imagine.

Food & nightlife

Eating and drinking in Spain is always a joy! Tarifa has countless restaurants, cafés, and tapas bars, plus a few lively clubs and bars for a night out. Prices for eating out are about 30–40% cheaper than in Northern Europe, so you’ll definitely get great value.
