General info

Lo Stagnone is a huge lagoon on the west coast of Sicily and is known as one of the most accessible and safest kitesurfing spots in Europe. But just like at any spot, there are a few things every kiter should pay attention to.

Bottom & safety

The lagoon is large, shallow (usually ankle to waist deep) and the bottom is mostly sand and mud. There are some shells and small stones, so reef boots are recommended to protect your feet. There are no dangerous reefs or rocks inside the lagoon itself, which makes this spot extremely safe for beginners.

Wind conditions

Lo Stagnone is famous for its thermal winds that blow reliably from March to November. The wind is usually side-onshore, which is safe for everyone.

  • In summer the wind can sometimes be a bit gustier, especially around midday.
  • Spring and autumn often bring the most consistent conditions.
  • The lagoon itself creates super flatwater, perfect for learning new tricks or practicing your upwind skills.

Crowds

This is a popular spot – in high season (July/August) it can get quite busy, especially around the kite schools. Expect lots of beginners and lessons in certain areas of the lagoon. Luckily, the area is huge, so with a little exploring you can always find a quieter spot.

Access & launch options

There are multiple launch spots along the lagoon, often connected to kite schools or centers. Usually, you’ll get access to a launch area when you buy a day pass from a school (small fee). The advantage is that you also get rescue service and facilities. Launching and landing are generally safe, although it can get chaotic when crowded – always pay close attention when setting up or taking down your kite.

(Wing) Foiling

Foiling in Lo Stagnone is possible, but only with a short mast and in specific areas of the lagoon. The water is simply too shallow in many places. In the deeper zones foiling works fine, but in the middle of the lagoon it’s often not an option.

Stagnone – North

If you want to escape the busy heart of Lo Stagnone, head a little further north. It almost feels like no man’s land here: you first drive down an off-road track through a prairie-like landscape before reaching the lagoon. Walking from most apartments it’s a bit far, but that’s exactly why it’s much calmer and more laid-back.

The further north you go, the more space you’ll find on the water – and the better the conditions become. The bottom turns sandier, making launching and landing much easier. The wind – mainly the Maestrale, the dominant direction here – also blows cleaner over the water, resulting in steadier, less gusty sessions.

Around the Duotone area there are still some rocks, making launching and landing less ideal. But if you continue a little further, towards KBC and the Jeremy Tronet Pro Center, you’ll find a much more relaxed launch: wider, sandier, and an easy-going place to start your session.

In short: Lo Stagnone North is perfect if you want more space, enjoy kiting without the crowds, and chase the best conditions for a progressive session.

Stagnone center

In the middle of the lagoon you’re right in the heart of the action: plenty of kite centers with facilities such as rescue, rental, and lessons, plus countless restaurants within walking distance. Ideal for those looking for convenience and a lively atmosphere.

Do keep in mind the crowds – this is the most popular part of the lagoon, especially in high season. Launching and landing work fine here, but with so many kiters it can sometimes get a little chaotic.

Stagnone South

In the south of the lagoon you’ll kite with both Sirocco and Maestrale in top conditions. It’s much quieter here, with a sandy bottom and a huge standing area, although the water can sometimes be very shallow.

Launching and landing is a bit trickier – you often need to walk into the water before starting. If you go too far south, the area becomes marshy and walking back can be difficult. Most facilities are further away, but you do have Salinas, a cozy little restaurant that’s an absolute must after your session.
