Baleia – Sea
📍 Location on Google Maps
Summary: Tropical kitesurf spot on the Atlantic coast with long, consistent waves and a laid-back vibe. Ideal for wave kiters who love power and style in a paradisiacal setting.
Wind directions:
Trade winds (E / SE): side-onshore, stable and powerful, blowing almost every day.
NE: sometimes lighter and more gusty, but usually still rideable.
Level: Intermediate to expert. Perfect for wave riders; challenging for beginners due to waves and currents.
Key points: Shorebreak can be heavy with strong waves. Watch out for currents at high tide and local fishing boats. No organized rescue → self-sufficiency required.
Launching & landing: Wide tropical sandy beach with plenty of space, though it can narrow at high tide.
Tide: The difference between high and low tide affects wave power. At low tide you’ll find longer wave lines; at high tide the shorebreak is stronger and more powerful.
Kite zone: No official kite zones. The beach is shared with surfers and fishermen → always respect their space.
Crowds / community: Much quieter than Brazil’s famous hotspots (Cumbuco, Jericoacoara). Small, relaxed kite and surf community.
Winging & Foiling: Excellent with the stable trade winds. Wingfoiling and wave foiling are possible, but due to currents and shorebreak only recommended for experienced riders.
Baleia – Lagoon
📍 Location on Google Maps
Summary: Hidden between the dunes of Baleia lies a stunning flatwater lagoon with glassy water. A true paradise for freestylers and kiters looking to perfect their tricks in tropical peace and quiet.
Wind directions:
Trade winds (E / SE): stable side- to side-onshore, strong and blowing almost daily.
NE: can work, but usually lighter and less consistent.
Level: Suitable for all levels from beginner to expert. The flat water is ideal for lessons, freestyle, and foiling.
Key points: Tides and seasons determine the water level. During the dry season the lagoon can become shallow or partly dry. No facilities directly at the spot, so come prepared.
Launching & landing: Plenty of space along the sandy shores and between the dunes. Be mindful to keep your gear clean – the sand can be coarse.
Tide: Less influence than the ocean, but water level changes with the seasons. Best conditions are usually during the rainy season when the lagoon is full.
Kite zone: Open and freely accessible spot, shared with a few locals and small groups of traveling kiters.
Crowds / community: Usually quiet; only in high season you’ll find small groups of freestylers or local rid
Downwinders
In Baleia, besides the mini-routes, you’ll also find beautiful short downwinders to the surrounding villages:
Baleia → Icaraí de Amontada (approx. 12–15 km): A classic downwinder along endless palm-lined beaches. Along the way you’ll ride small waves and wide flatwater sections – perfect for playing around. You finish in the charming fishing village of Icaraí, home to several pousadas and kite centers.
Baleia → Mundaú (approx. 15–18 km): A tropical ride with stunning views, ending at an impressive river mouth. Here you literally kite into the lagoon of Mundaú, with glassy flat water and mangroves all around.
Both downwinders are suitable for intermediate riders, as you stay close to the coastline. The constant trade winds make the routes reliable, but arranging buggy or car support for the return trip is highly recommended.
