Kite & Surf
Paje is without a doubt the best kite spot in our entire collection. A huge lagoon with crystal-clear colors and warm water. With the right tide you can stand almost anywhere: at low tide it’s knee-deep and glassy flat — perfect for learning or drilling new tricks. At high tide it gets a bit choppier, but still world-class kiting.
On top of that, you can surf the reef on long, clean waves. Zanzibar has a growing surf scene and on good days you can get out there almost daily to paddle out on the reef and catch waves.

Weather and wind
Zanzibar is known for reliable wind and a tropical climate. The island has two main seasons: from December to March the Kaskazi (northeast trade wind) blows, and from June to September the Kusi (southeast trade wind). Both are driven by steady trade winds over the Indian Ocean, creating stable conditions.
During Kaskazi the wind is usually a bit lighter (average 12–18 knots) — ideal for beginners and freeriders. During Kusi the wind is typically stronger and more consistent (average 16–25 knots) — perfect for long sessions and downwinders.
It’s warm year-round, with occasional tropical showers outside the core seasons. The water is always around 27–29 °C, so you’ll kite in boardshorts or a bikini.

We live with the wind and go with the flow. Kitesurfing sits at the heart of everything we do. Downwinders along the reef, sessions on sandbanks in the middle of the ocean, endless days on the water. But creating doesn’t stop when you step off your board. This is where conversations, plans, projects and friendships are born.
You’ll meet surfers, digital nomads, musicians, artists, writers and tech minds. People who want to make, learn, share and experience.
During the day you follow your rhythm. Work, create, kite, or do absolutely nothing. In the evening we eat together, share stories, and new ideas start to flow.

Which material do I need?
Always try to pack larger sizes and, if you have the choice, a larger board. The ideal kite set for an average weight of 75kg is a 15-12-9 m² with a 140 board. Skimboards, strapless boards, and foils are also perfect toys in Zanzibar! You can also always rent the latest CORE equipment from us if you always want to hit the water with the right size and don’t want to lug it around!
How is the wind?
The wind on Zanzibar is a hot topic in the kitesurfing world. The windy seasons are from June to September and from December to early March. Every season is different on Zanzibar. We’ve experienced seasons where you’re working hard every day on your 9m² kite, but also seasons where we had no wind for several days or only used large kites (14m²+). It’s still a sport dependent on Mother Nature, so go with the flow and you’ll have the kitesurfing holiday of a lifetime!
Do i need vaccinations
Make sure you have completed all vaccinations with your doctor. If you are coming from the EU, a yellow fever vaccination is not required, but it is if you are coming from other destinations. Regardless of the length of your stay, the following vaccinations are recommended for Tanzania: vaccination against DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio), vaccination against hepatitis A (infectious jaundice), and a vaccination against yellow fever. If you have not had a measles vaccination, an MMR vaccination is recommended for Tanzania. Tip: Make an appointment with your local Municipal Health Service (GGD) or GP in a timely manner (some vaccinations take a week to become effective). Do I need an VISA?
Yes, but you have to buy this at the airport for $50. So always make sure you have enough dollars with you when you arrive at the airport. This will save you a lot of time.
What about flights
We don’t arrange flights; we mainly advise you on which flight is best for you! You fly to Stone Town, Zanzibar City (ZNZ). After landing, it’s another hour’s drive to the final destination, Paje. Tui flies direct for good prices; don’t forget to check via Brussels, as that can make a big difference. We also recommend Skyscanner to check your best flight. Would you rather have KiteActive take care of everything? No problem. Enter your dates, budget, etc., and preferences (travel time, legroom, transfers) by email, and we’ll book the best flight for you for a €50 booking fee.
What is there to explore more?
Besides kitesurfing, Paje is a perfect place to learn to dive or just relax on the beach. In the evenings, you can always enjoy drinks with fellow kitesurfers at one of the local bars. For example, every Friday night there’s a big beach party at the Jambo bar, and fun parties are regularly held at the nearby resorts. There are plenty of activities and things to see on the island. Our team will make sure you won’t be bored 🙂
